Around the world retailers seem to be trying to prove how socially and environmentally responsible they are. Britain’s biggest retailer Tesco has just announced it won’t use cotton from Uzbekistan because of forced child labour. Last week the Chinese government announced it would be banning environmentally unfriendly free plastic bags. But can the retailing industry ever be truly sustainable? Michael Gallagher reports.
